Our Mission:

empowering our customers FOR success in their soft matter research By providing the highest quality data, professional and expert training, and access to cutting-edge analytical instrumentation .

The SM Core Lab is a newly established for-service laboratory in the UNC Chemistry department located in the ground floor of the Caudill Bldg with approx. 700 sq ft of laboratory space, providing ample room for several soft matter characterization instrumentation including DSC, TGA, Hybrid DMA/Rheometer, and Extensometer. The SM Core Lab also partners with other UNC core facilities to allow our customers access to additional instrumentation and techniques and providing instruction and analytical services relating to characterization of soft matter. We expect our instrument capabilities to grow as we strive to meet the needs of our growing clientele.

The lab is a sub-core of the UNC CHANL Core Facilities directed by Dr. Bob Geil. CHANL receives support from NSF through the National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure,NNCI, program and is a member of the North Carolina Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network and RTNN.

Open-access instrument use and training and sample analysis services are available to UNC members and affiliates as well as external customers. We aim to adhere to the highest standards while ensuring that our equipment are always in top shape with regular maintenance and calibration so that our customers can be confident with their data.

Cynthia is an organic chemist with extensive experience in a wide range of chemistries from small molecules to biological and synthetic macromolecules in research and support positions in academia and industry. She is well-versed in a variety of thermoanalytical, rheometry, spectroscopy, and chromatography instrumentation including DSC, TGA, LC/MS, GPC, GC/MS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, MALDI-MS, NMR, CE, SFC, TLC, Flash Chromatography, SPE, UV/VIS, FTIR, EDS-SEM, Rheometer, and DMA. She comes to UNC from the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs where she was employed for 20 years as a researcher, 8 years of which was focused on developing novel high performance fluoropolymers for aerospace applications. Cynthia was also responsible for the procurement, maintenance, and service of over 60 instruments in the chemistry department at USAFA as a co-Equipment Custodian. She also had the great opportunity working closely with Chemistry instructors and students by developing methods and providing instrument operation and applications consultating/training in support of class course labs and staff/student research projects.
